The Tulip Bulb Mania - Extraordinary Popular Delusions And The Madness Of Crowds

By Roger Sorensen

"Sober nations have all at once become desperate gamblers, and risked almost their existence upon the turn of a piece of paper. To trace the history of the most prominent of these delusions is the object of the present pages. Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one." --Charles MacKay, 1841

Have you heard about the speculative tulip bulb craze that gripped seventeenth-century Holland? The peak of the mania saw a single tulip bulb selling for the equivalent of $150,000 or it might have been $1,500,000, depending on which historian is doing the talking. This story is true, it really happened, and it could happen again.

In 1559 Conrad Gestner brought the first tulip bulbs from Constantinople to Holland and Germany, and people fell in love with them. In very short order tulip bulbs became a status symbol for the wealthy they were very beautiful and difficult to get.

Early buyers were people who truly prized the lovely flowers, but it wasn't long before speculators got invovled and many buyers were merely in for the money. They created trading activity, and eventually tulip bulbs were placed onto the local market exchanges. By 1634, the demand to own tulips had spread from the wealthy class into the middle classes of Dutch society. Merchants and shopkeepers began to vie with one and another for single tulip bulbs.

How bad was it? It was so bad... it was so bad that at the height of the tulip bulb bubble in 1635, a single tulip bulb was sold for the following items:

 four tons of wheat
 eight tons of rye
 one bed
 four oxen
 eight pigs
 12 sheep
 one suit of clothes
 two casks of wine
 four tons of beer
 two tons of butter
 1,000 pounds of cheese
 one silver drinking cup.

The present day value of all these items comes to nearly $40,000! For a single tulip bulb we don't even know the color of. Things became so bizarre that people were selling everything they owned their homes, their livestock, everything to buy single bulbs on the expectation that the bulbs would continue to grow in value.

By 1636, tulips were established on the Amsterdam stock exchange to accomodate the speculators and gamblers who had become the primary purchasers of tulip bulbs.

Tulip notaries and clerks were appointed to record transactions, and public laws and regulations were developed to control the craze. Late in 1636, a few tulip owners began to liquidate their holdings. At first prices began to weaken slowely, then more rapidly as confidence was destroyed. By then panic seized the market.

Within six weeks, tulip prices crashed by 90%. Defaults on contracts and liens on owners were widespread and the Dutch government refused to interfere. Instead, it simply advised tulip holders to agree among themselves on some plan to stabilize prices and restore public confidence. Eventually assembled deputies in Amsterdam declared null and void all contracts that were made at the height of the mania, these were the ones made prior to November 1636. Tulip contracts made after November 1636 were settled if buyers paid merely 10% of the prices to which they had earlier agreed.

Tulip prices continued to fall. Next, the provincial council in the Hague was asked to invent some measure to stabilize tulip prices and public credit. Tulip prices continued to fal. In Amsterdam, judges regarded tulip contracts as gambling activities and court rules held that gambling debts were not debts in the eyes of the law. No court in Holland would enforce payment. Tulip collectors, speculators, and gamblers who had tulips at the time of the collapse were left with ruinous losses.

Tulip prices soon plunged past the present equivalent of a dollar each. Is it possible for you to imagine buying an investment for $76,000, only to discover six weeks later that it was worth no more than one dollar? Commerce in Holland suffered a severe shock it did not recover from for many years.

Now I know you are thinking "What kind of fool would possibly get caught up in that? I understand, were talking TULIPS here not food, shelter, clothing, or firearms! TULIPS! What could cause people to lose such control of their senses?

I believe the answer is greed. Instead of building the value of their portfolios carefully and with understanding, they went for the quick buck. As long as it looked like the sky was the limit, nobody wanted to accept the fact that they were buying very expensive tulip bulbs.

Do you think people are too smart to fall for this kind of speculative risk today? Do you remember the Internet Craze of the late 90's? Otherwise how about these great investment words: Beanie Baby.

Upgrading Your Financial Standing Through Refinancing After Bankruptcy

By Dean Shainin

When you think that your finances will no longer withstand due to bankruptcy you have the option of refinancing. Refinancing is a financial condition wherein the one in debt will find somebody or a company who will pay off the existing loan.

When buying a house or a car, many people usually make use of refinancing as the most convenient way of regaining their financial status. It is indeed a big test on your part when you decide to refinance after declaring bankruptcy. The reason behind why we avail of refinancing is that we will be able to save more cash. You will be free of paying several monthly loan obligations with the idea of debt consolidation.

The next issue after making a decision of refinancing is to prepare ourselves for such a plan. We need to be educated on this. After declaring bankruptcy, you have to prepare yourself in refinancing your mortgage.

You will have to start paying on a regular basis your bills and present mortgage in order to have a better payment history. Secure a new credit card account that will contribute to your credit score.

If it is possible you could open a savings account for your cash assets. The more cash you have, the better your application to be approved. In order to earn more you may want to undertake on income generating activities like selling second hand books, clothes or toys. If you have time why not apply for a better job so as to raise more funds for your cash account.

Once you are ready for refinancing, look for lenders who are willing to pay your previous loan. Make a research on mortgage lenders and their corresponding rates. We should be careful about their quotes and rates. The best deal normally is with a slightly higher rate but with low fees. You should not be convinced about an offer which is too good to be true because it may just be capitalizing on your previous problem.

Some lenders will give you an attractive refinancing package. If you are going to refinance your mortgage, they will try to offer you a chance to cash out part of your homes equity. I suppose that will be a very good option if you are planning some improvements in your home or you are considering the purchase of a new car. But if you are focused on improving your credit record, then it is best to keep intact the equity of your home.

Your application for a loan will be submitted on line or by mail after making a decision on what terms you selected. You should bear in mind that there is no guarantee on quotes; hence rates will always vary slightly once the approval of your application has been made. Do not worry, you still have the chance to review your loan before it will be finalized.

After completing the requirements for refinancing, you can work out some means in order to lower the interest rates by refinancing for two years so that you will rebuild your credit history. Be faithful in paying your bills and your cash reserves will be better in no time. If you are planning again for refinancing, be sure that there is an improvement of your credit score. Be sure the bankruptcy has taken care of all the accounts on your existing credit record. You will be very much qualified to apply to traditional mortgage lenders, considering the fact that you have re-built a reliable credit history.

Accounting Leads Are Overpriced

By Tino Buntic

Are you a chartered accountant, management accountant, CPA, tax accountant, or even a financial planner? Do you purchase accounting leads from accounting lead generation websites such as incentAclick?

I'm going to let "the cat out of the bag" and let you know why these leads are overpriced and how you can generate your own accounting leads at a fraction of the cost.

There are dozens of accounting leads sites that draw visitors to their site, collect their information, then repackage and resell that information as a sales lead to accountants like yourself. You gladly pay these websites between $5 and $100 for each accounting sales lead because it is profitable for you and generates a lot of new business.

But, you should know that what you pay between $5 and $100 for these websites pay just 5 cents to $1 for. So, in essence they are a "middle man" collecting information from prospects and selling it to you. They draw visitors to their sites via pay per click advertising like the Google Adwords system. They place ads in the "sponsored results" sections of search engines. That's how they get the information that they turn around and sell to you at a steep markup.

You don't have to pay this steep markup for accounting sales leads. You can use the same system that they use. All you need to do is first set up a website for your accounting business. These days a professional looking website can cost you under $100. Thats a one-time fee. When you have your website ready, you sign up for Googles Adwords services and place ads in Googles search results. Your ads will show whenever people are searching for accounting services. You pay only when someone clicks on your ad. And, of course, that fee from the click will be remarkably lower than what you would pay a middle man to gather those prospects for you.

It's easy and you'll pay a lot less for the same accounting leads that you are accustomed to receiving.

Tino Buntic created http://www.trade-pals.com to provide free sales leads, including accounting leads to business professionals across North America, including CPAs, chartered accountants, Management accountants, tax accountants, and financial planners. TradePals is a directory of business professionals ins major cities across the United States and Canada, including New York, Chicago, Boston, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Dallas, Colorado Springs, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Seattle, San Diego, Boise, Toledo, Raleigh, Jacksonville, Miami, Nashville, St Louis, Kansas City, Ottawa, Des Moines, and Atlantic City. Learn to Invest Money in Small Cap Stocks and Make Triple Digit Profits (Part One)

By J.S. Kim

Everyday, there is a new EBay or Microsoft or Dell company that files for an IPO and that will make the early buyers of its stock very wealthy in several years. The trick is how to find them and invest in them safely. Sure a General Electric or Microsoft could possibly have a bump up in share price in one year of 30% or 40% with the release of a phenomenal product or service, but the chances of earning 70%, 100%, or even 300% in one year with large cap companies is quite slim. But it’s not so with small and micro cap stocks. In fact every month, there will be another micro or small cap stock that nobody has heard of that will make loads of savvy investors rich.

So the key is how do you play riskier stocks like this? There are five rules you should always follow. In Part I of this series, I’ll review rule number one.

Rule Number One: Do your homework.

When you find a micro or small cap stock that excites you, make sure you do your homework before making the decision to buy in. Always research the float of a small stock. Why is this important? For a number of reasons. Let’s consider this scenario. You research a small stock ABC that you really like. You discover that ABC only has $10MM of outstanding shares, a float of $5MM because insiders hold the other $5MM, and average daily volume for the past three months of $3.7MM. Well you could be in for a very bumpy ride given the fact that daily volume is averaging 75% of the float (total amount of shares owned by the public). This discovery alone may make you reconsider buying the stock.

Furthermore, if stock ABC has recently had its initial public offering (IPO), then you must absolutely find out when its lock-up period expires. Usually, insiders are restricted from selling off their shares for six months after an IPO. Let’s look at our hypothetical stock ABC again, assuming it is now four months after the IPO. Many times, share prices of companies start falling about two months before a lock-up period expires in anticipation of insiders selling off their shares and flooding the market with volume once they legally can do so. If stock ABC is trading relatively flat and there is no added demand right before insiders unload their stock, an overnight doubling of the stock’s float is bound to dilute the stock price, and possibly do it very rapidly. It’s simply supply and demand at work. There is now twice the supply of stock on the market without any increased demand.

However, let’s look at the flip side. Let’s consider a company XYZ that has $20MM of outstanding shares and a float of $17MM. Positive news surrounding company XYZ has steadily driven its stock price higher, right up until the point the lock-up period for insiders expires. Let’s assume, even though prices have been climbing steadily, that the insiders still decide to cash out and sell off $2.5MM of their shares immediately. Because this company’s float is so small and demand is high, release of additional shares may create a buying frenzy that will drive prices up even more rapidly.

So to summarize rule number one, always do your homework and know everything you possibly can about the stock you are buying. As I’ve demonstrated, in one situation a small float may hurt a stock’s price while in another situation, a small float may tremendously help the stock price.

I’ll review the remaining four rules in the remaining articles of this series.

So What Causes Trader Failure?

By Paul Langham

It is a well known statistic that over 90% of traders do or eventually will lose some or all of their money. It is also interesting to note that many highly qualified and intelligent people come to the market and very surprised when they find out how difficult it is to make money. In this article I will cover some of the reasons why this is so.

In order to simplify matters I have created a list of reasons which hamper peoples progress and these are why most people lose money. Many are the often sited and somewhat hackneyed ones; others are perhaps new to you.

1. Attachment to money.
2. No Trading Plan
3. Under capitalization.
4. Fear and Greed.
5. Excessive Leverage
6. Inadequate risk controls
7. Lack of market understanding
8. Impatience
9. Lack of interest in Trading
10. Unwillingness to accept you are wrong

The cumulative result of one or more of the above is normally enough to finish most traders off. As I mentioned earlier, even well qualified and otherwise successful traders things.

Just as a taster I will now look at why it is that outwardly successful people, perhaps, doctors, dentists or lawyers have such issues when it comes to financial trading. For many of these people, to fail at trading is their first 'failure' in life. Exams have been passed, businesses built and all this with great ease and then the trading game comes and trips them up. People are very surprised when this happens.

When you trade you need to develop a skill set and not all of us have a natural tendency towards either obtaining the skill set or if learnt, applying it correctly. Discipline is of paramount importance following what you set out to do is a must. Imagine you have a method which wins say twice in five trades. Imagine also that you take three trades and all of them are losers, are you now going to abandon your method and your plan, or are you going to take those subsequent trades as per your plan ? As a trader I can tell you, you won't feel like taking those trades, but you must, if you want to follow your plan. Three losing trades is quite possible, it could quite easily have been three winning trades - the market doesn't offer you successful trades all packaged up in blocks the way you would like them.

In subsequent articles I will discuss each of the above issues in turn.

Flexibility Amidst Financial Uncertainties

By Nand Kishore Sahu

Life is full of uncertainties and when it comes to finance there is always an element of insecurity about your expenses. You can never predict about your financial position for a particular time. It may happen that you save a lot because of extra earnings or spend a lot and strain your budget due to some unexpected expenditures in that particular month. Now if you have a mortgage loan running then you need to pay a definite instalment every month and paying it successfully for years needs a lot of planning and luck. A couple of defaults might dent your credit history and can put your collateral at risk. To cover you against such uncertainties of life FLEXIBLE MORTGAGE loans are designed.

A flexible mortgage loan is like other mortgage loans with flexibilities in the payment of monthly installments. You can increase or decrease the installments or take payment holidays. More importantly you can borrow back the overpayments which you have made. The interest calculated on these loans is on a daily basis so that you dont pay any interest on the amount which you have already paid.

A FLEXIBLE MORTGAGE loan because of its flexible features allows the borrower to design his repayment plan on his own way. If the borrower is going through a financial crisis he can reduce his installments or simply put them off without defaulting and if he has money he can utilise them to pay his outstanding loan amount without being penalised. It also gives you an option to increase or decrease your repayment period.

So if you are one of those who want to design their repayment plan as per their wish and financial health then a flexible mortgage loan might be the one you were looking for. It will also ensure you peace of mind by not putting your house at risk every time you skip your monthly instalments. This loan might work well for people who are self employed or those who dont have fixed monthly earnings.

Loan seekers should remember that a FLEXIBLE MORTGAGE comes at a higher interest rate than a fixed mortgage loan and you need to be active in using the flexible characteristics of the loan to make most out of it. You also need to understand the mortgage features and its terms fully and clearly before availing such a mortgage loan.

Remove Financial Fiasco with Personal Debt Consolidation

By Natasha Anderson

The measure which has been proved most beneficial for people in solving debt problem is personal debt consolidation. Personal debt consolidation manages the series of unmanageable debts. Generally, the debts arise because of the leniency in following the financial plan. This results in accumulation of number of debts. Further if we make delay in paying debts, it adversely affects the credit score.

The reasons why the people prefer personal debt consolidation, to get rid of their debts are as follows:

Though, other alternatives are also available from which the person can eliminate debts such as, through credit cards etc. But, they carry high rate of interest and personal debt consolidation carries relatively low rate of interest.

Through personal debt consolidation, the people can focus on single lender rather than number of creditors.

Even the people having poor credit score, can avail personal debt consolidation. And further, it will also help them to improve their credit score.

Availing personal debt consolidation is just like availing any other loan. Before going for personal debt consolidation ensure, that it suits your needs. The person is also recommended to consult financial advisor. Financial advisor will analyze problem and finally will suggest the way to get rid of the debt problem.

The points which lenders consider for approving an amount for personal debt consolidation are:

Equity in asset( in case of secured loan)

Credit record

Payment period

Flow of income

Financial status.

Do consider your need, that is, how much you need to borrow? You must thoroughly understand your needs. That how much can you arrange by yourself. As the person, must always make an effort to borrow less. Personal debt consolidation can be availed whether by placing security or without security as well. But, by placing security, the lender feels more secure and hence offers lower rate of interest and flexible repayment period. Along with certain advantages, they also carry risk on the asset. But, this risk arises occasionally i.e. on missing or making delay in repayments. Whereas unsecured personal debt consolidation suits to such people who doesnt want to undertake risk on their asset.

As your financial position and debts are concerned, you should always deal with the reputable and authorized lender. As some lender, in order to make their profit can put you in worst condition.

Personal debt consolidation can also be availed through a broker. As said experience counts, in the same manner brokers have sufficient experience in getting a best loan deal. But, in return they charge commission or a fee for their services.

Finally, if you also have been victimized of serious problem of debts, then consult lender for availing such services. And, get rid off debts as soon as possible.

After having herself gone through the ordeal of loan borrowing, Natasha Anderson understands the need for good quality loan advice. Financial Forecast - Floods, Forests, and Fuel

By Toni Phelps

Financial news: Dire times call for drastic measures. Hurricane Katrina; alone, dealt a major blow to our economic infrastructure, causing fuel prices to soar. It's amazing how the oil industry raised prices to offset their additional costs of refining and transporting oil, costs which they attributed to hurricanes on the Gulf Coast. What's so amazing, is that the oil giants just reported a large quarter of earnings. How can that be, when they claimed the loss of the refinery and pipeline in Louisiana burdened them with additional costs? As winter sets in, heating oil shortages can be anticipated, with no immediate, drastic reduction in costs.

Setting that issue aside, and giving due respect and condolences to the victims of the Gulf Coast, the upside is that we project a boom in construction. But there's a problem. Where will the timber come from? Conservationists reject opening more timber land in the U.S., while democratic politicians rebuke importing timber. If we are to rebuild the Gulf Coast, and employ tens of thousands of people alone in that region who are currently out of work due to their businesses being destroyed, there will need to be an immediate resolution to this issue.

No one desires disasters, but at least the recent disasters occurred at a time that may bring economic revival. This Christmas shopping season may lack luster for the retail industry, but every penny gained will indeed help, and to say the tax revenue is needed is an understatement. Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi estimates a needed 63 billion in federal relief funds to rebuild Katrina's damage to South Mississippi. Don't forget, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida also suffered from Hurricanes and flood waters. It could be argued that shopping; versus charitable contributions, may have a greater positive impact on recovery.

But shopping also presents a problem. Now that the new bankruptcy laws are in affect, there may be trouble following the Christmas season if consumers are unable to repay debts, either because of fuel prices or loss of employment income. The key here is for consumers to shop, but not to forego their personal budgets.

U.S. resources are being stretched near the breaking point. Just as in World War II, consumers need to conserve what resources we have. Construction materials and fuel are the top two resources which require conservation.

Partly due to fuel prices, material and labor costs, U.S. automakers will continue to have difficulty with sales. While this may drive down sticker prices, there will likely be fewer consumers who can afford a new auto, particular SUVs and trucks with lower fuel mileage. Anticipate more autoworker layoffs, as well as soaring prices for steel and a possibility of steelworker layoffs.

Also expect lenders to rally for the Fed to lower interest rates. This can help improve housing starts, which we desperately need to encourage, but may present another problem with outstanding debt and lender risk.

In 2006, watch where; and with whom, you invest your money. If the Federal Government relaxes lending restrictions in an effort to boost the economy, the potential for high risk lenders to go under will increase dramatically.

For a healthy economic recovery, we will need to conserve our natural resources, but not place restrictions which would interfere with construction or our nation's infrastructure. Consumers must carryon business as usual with a safety margin of savings to offset any rising costs. And, most importantly, as JFK said: Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

Article by Toni Phelps of Credit Federal, which provides consumer credit resources.

Your Debt-Challenge and How To Take Control Now

By AnneMarie Callan

Constantly thinking of and worrying about your debt-challenge can eat away at your soul. It can make you ill - seriously ill! It is a fact that cancer can be brought on by constant worrying. It is also a fact that many people have committed suicide entirely because of their financial problems.

However, the amount of time you spend worrying could so easily be used in a more positive way. Your debts are not going to be with you forever. If you are in debt at this moment, remember it is just a temporary situation you are in right now. It could last for a few more months or even a few more years but that depends on how you treat your debts.

If you constantly spend your time thinking about them, on awakening each morning, during the day and as you go to bed at night, what time have you got left for thinking about what you want to achieve in life? Just by shifting your 'thinking' you can open many doors to new opportunities.

The following saying is from the 'Buddah'

"You are what you think.
All that you are, arises from your thoughts.
With your thoughts, you make your world."

Think about those words. Are they true?

Instead of thinking about your debts, deal with them by getting advice from a debt management agency. They are the ones who have the experience of dealing with debts and helping people get their lives back into a good financial order.

There are many debt management agencies who do not have charges and have been set up by governmentz to help people eliminate their debt. You should never need to pay for this advice.

However, if you are in debt, you must remember that your debt is just a small part of your life, so don't give it more importance than it should have. Decide that you have spend enough time thinking about it and start thinking about what you would like to achieve in the next chapter of your life.

Use your imagination to move onto your next goal because what you think about constantly is what you will get. Your imagination is just one of the many amazing gifts which we have all been blessed with and with it you can achieve all that you think about.

Every book you read and every film you have watched has been derived from the imagination of someone else. Every business which has been formed has grown from a tiny seed of imagination from the founder.

With tremendous determination on your part, you can turn your own imagination into any tangible asset, any time that you desire.

You have a choice, so what do you want to think about today?

Anne Callan - has vast experience of dealing with the affects of living with debt. She has written about this in the hope of helping others to live a happier and fun-filled life. Within her book you will find many ways of leading the life you deserve, including a way of getting a fun free holiday. You will discover an alternative to worrying about your debt in this ebook.
